I have the honor of serving as the current President of the Senior Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Arizona.
I am writing in support of the Petition to Amend Rule 32 (e) Ariz. R. Sup.Ct.
There are over 5500 members of the Senior Lawyers Division and I believe that the institutional memory contained in these active, inactive, and retired members of the Bar can benefit the State Bar's Board of Governors. Already Division members are busy mentoring young lawyers and law students; performing pro-bono work; serving on the Foster Care Review Board; serving in countless nonprofit and community roles; and providing their wisdom to the public. The proposed change to Rule 32(e) would also provide a voice on the Board of Governors to Division members who, because of their retired or inactive status, cannot vote for Board members.
I am proud of our Division members and what they are doing to provide access to justice and to make our Arizona community a better place.
I respectfully request that you amend Rule 32 (e) to give the Division president a "seat at the table."

I write in support of R-25-0017 Petition to Amend Rule 32(e), Ariz. R. Sup. Ct.

I was admitted to the State Bar in April 1977 and am a member of the Senior Lawyers Division. I believe that the collective wisdom and experience of members of the Division are valuable and should be represented on the Board of Governors. Such representation would give the Board important historical knowledge and perspective, which would enhance the decision-making of the Board.

My name is R. Neil Irwin and I have been a practicing attorney in Arizona for over 50 years. I became a member of the Executive Counsel of the Senior Lawyers Division in order to represent long time lawyers and to assist them in meeting the challenges of today. As a furtherance of the goals and representation of senior lawyers, it is extremely important that representation also occurs at the Board of Governors. Since the Board of Governors is charged with the obligation to oversee the policy making and operations of the State Bar, senior lawyers should be both represented by and available to speak on their behalf of the Senior Lawyers Division. The Senior Lawyers Division represents a very substantial percentage of the total number of lawyers in Arizona and, thus, deserve inclusion at the rule making level of the State Bar. As an almost 50-year member of the SBA and a current member of the Executive Council of the SBA Senior Lawyer Division, I heartily support the proposed Rule amendment whereby the President of the SLD EC will sit as a voting member of the Board of Governors. I have been an active member of the State Bar of Arizona (SBA) since 1973. I am on the Executive Council of the Senior Lawyers Division (SLD) of the SBA and am a past president. As has been stated by prior Replies, the SLD has in excess of 5,500 members. Our Executive Council is extremely active; examples include mentoring, pro bono, volunteerism, pretrial justice, and creative writing. We present regular drop-in sessions which have included topics such as rule of law, dementia, retirement, CASA, Foster Care Review Board, and AI. We find that senior lawyers desire to participate in activities related to the law and make available to the general public their experiences and knowledge. I support the petition of the SLD to have the president of the SLD become a member of the Governing Board of the SBA.
